The end of the US Civil War and the era of reconstruction had a significant impact on Frederick Douglass. During the period covered by this volume, which contains 62 speeches by Douglass, he was active in various campaigns, including those for equal rights for black Americans and women's suffrage.

Contemporary and Early Reviews

Account of a speech given by Douglass on the twenty-second anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Washington, D.C. from the June 1885 issue of The American Missionary.  This speech was later than the speeches covered in this book.
